7 Dog breeds that will be your best friends in the City

Most dogs need vast, open spaces to run about and stretch. This helps them stay active and healthy. When you’re living in a city, owning a dog might seem like wishful thinking. Lack of space and apartment living might deter you from getting home a cuddly canine. However, there are certain dogs which seem to have no problem being indoors for a good part of their day and make for excellent companions in the city.

Here’s our list of 7 dog breeds that can be your best friends in the city:

#1. Beagle

Their small size makes beagles an excellent companion to spend time with at home. Even though beagles were originally bred as hunting dogs, they have minimal exercise needs. A good dose of daily walks, coupled with additional playtime and oodles of attention will ensure that your beagle becomes your best friend.

#2. Pug

The already adorable pugs give us yet another reason to love them. They make for energetic and playful pets who are comfortable hanging out indoors. Pugs need plenty of attention from their owners and thrive in their company. Regular walks are essential to keep them going and they don’t really need a huge living space. These small sized dogs are all heart when it comes to their human parents.

#3. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

A dog of small stature and big name, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels love a leisurely existence. They love nothing better than being indoors and curling up next to their master on the couch.  They’re highly adaptable and require regular walks to stay healthy. Because of their small size, they can exist comfortably within the confines of a small apartment in the city.

#4. Dachshund

Dachshunds are curious, fun and active breeds who are perfect for urban dwellers. They’re not very needy and as long as their limited needs are met, they’re happy spending most of their time indoors. When their owners give them the right amount of attention and take them out for regular walks, they remain playful and energetic. However, when choosing a Dachshund as a pet, make sure they’re trained early on to help them settle in their home.

#5. Great Dane

The Great Dane may not be an obvious choice due to their sheer size, but they adapt wonderfully to city living. Their quiet and lazy personality makes them a great pet despite their physically imposing nature. Great Danes need minimal but regular exercise and they are easy to train. They can happily give up outdoor activities to just relax with their masters.

#6. Havanese

The Havanese dogs are a small breed, weighing only 10-15 pounds, but are extremely energetic. They keep you entertained by running around within your house and getting most of their daily exercise. They’re relatively quiet and require a lot of grooming. The Havanese dogs love being pampered and would rather stay indoors than going outside and risking their long coats and gorgeous hair from ruining. They’re content living in an apartment and make great pets for city living.

#7. English Bulldog

The English Bulldogs love spending time indoors with their families. Originally bred in one of the rainiest countries in the world, they are used to being cuddly companions on a rainy day. All they need is a cozy corner to nap and comfort during hot weather, and they’ll make for excellent city pets.

If you live or are planning to live in a small apartment in the city, these dogs will make sure you don’t give up on your dreams of coming home to a furry friend.
